The quilt “Baby Scraps”, was created for the “Youth Collaboration” issue for Curated Quilts magazine in 2019. My daughter Leonora was two years old at the time, and together we used fabric oils and fabric crayons to create marks and designs on the set of “fat quarters” in the prescribed colors for the contest. I wanted to document the creative process of improvisational piecing, both for my own curiosity and to reflect on my choices, and to show people the ideas and changes that a quilt top goes through before it maybe takes a left turn and surprises us all. I hope adding the element of time and a look “behind the scenes” in the piecing process, gives the viewer a deeper appreciation for the creative work that all artists in this medium undertake.
