Handmade Album - Nebraska Wedding Photographer

Here is a peek at the type of albums I've been building this last month, classic and simple with an emphasis on the images. For me, a matted photograph takes me back to photo exhibitions I've been to over the years, from the Sheldon to the Fraenkel. It's a timeless way of presenting photographs and it only seems natural to give the same treatment to all images worth preserving. I'll be sharing more prototypes as I go along!Nebraska Wedding Photographer, Handmade AlbumNebraska Wedding Photographer, Handmade AlbumNebraska Wedding Photographer, Handmade AlbumNebraska Wedding Photographer, Handmade AlbumThese are photographs I made of my nephew Bastian when he was born last April.

February Photobooth First Friday - Nebraska Wedding Photographer

I love First Fridays at Parrish Studios! It's pretty much the coolest place in town to go, everything good is there in one place - lots of art, cool shops, music, socializing and of course ME! That is unless I'm out and about enjoying First Friday myself! I did a Valentines Photobooth, which has turned into a yearly event. Check out these awesome people who stopped by my studio and hammed it up for me, check out my Facebook page for the rest of the gallery! Like-ity like it and tag you and your friends:)Lincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_01.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_02.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_03.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_04.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_05.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_06.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_07.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_08.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_09.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_10.jpgLincoln_Nebraska_Wedding_Photographer_11.jpg

Hug The One You're With

I meant to write a cute post yesterday morning about when Joe and I fell in love four years ago, but I was broadsided by the terrible news that my mom's cousin, Robin Coulter Lapasoetes, had died in a car accident on Tuesday.  I always thought she was a very impressive person, and like too many people I admire, I didn't get to spend as much time with them as I had wanted.  It saddens me to think of the pain her family is going through, my heart goes out to them. To quote my mom, "Her family, friends and community won't know what to do without her. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandma, friend, environmentalist and business woman who wasn't afraid to follow her passions and beliefs and live her life with the greatest vitality you can imagine. We will miss you Robin."

Here's a nice interview with her:

Go on, just hug them.

A Guide To The Ghosts Of Lincoln - Nebraska Photographer

Yay! Finally got my copy of "A Guide To The Ghosts Of Lincoln" by Alan Boye.  Guess who made the photo for the cover?  Yours truly!  Most kids who grew up in Lincoln have read this book, looking for their neighborhood wondering if they'll maybe find a story about their very own house.  Creepy stories about Robber's Cave, the Capitol Building and Penitentiary. The story about how the photograph came to be isn't in there, but I thought I'd share it here.  I took it last winter riding my bike home from visiting my parents at their house near East High.  I hate riding my bike in the snow; it's cold, slippery, and... cold.  I was trying to get home as soon as possible, before I froze or slipped, and decided to cut through the Holmes Lake area.  Well, this was when I had my skinny tire bike with no gears, so my idea was stupid and I had to push my bike through the snow to get to the road that led to my "short cut".  I thought I heard footsteps and started to get freaked out, some creep-o was following me or crawling through the bushes or something.  I just kept pushing my bike through the snow, hearing a second set of footsteps as I slipped around in my traction-free cowboy boots.  I was really freaked out.  Then I had my second bright idea - if someone wanted to murder me, maybe I could scare them off with the possibility of getting a photo of them, or at least give the detectives a clue to who murdered me.  Since I had my camera in my bag, (as photographers like to do) I took it out, shouted something like "Ok string-of-bad-words! I'm going to take your photo if you come any closer!" Which is really threatening.  I stood there for a minute, I didn't see anyone or hear the footsteps again, but I took a photo anyways and somehow adrenaline got me home at Lance Armstrong on steroids speeds.  When I got home, I told myself how foolish I was to be scared, and that the footsteps were an echo of my own and I went to bed and forgot about it.  A few days later, when I downloaded the card from my camera, I almost deleted the photo from Holmes Lake.  On closer inspection there was a ghostly figure in the trees who was invisible to my eyes, and only my camera could see.

Nebraska Wedding PhotographerMy friend Nate Putens happened to be working on the design for the new book, and thought the photo of the mysterious apparition would work for the cover.

Is it a ghost story, or just a strange photo?  We'll never know...

Welcome Back Taura!

It's 2014 - have you made your New Year's Resolution yet?  Joe and I went to Kauai for our vacation this year - which was wonderful by the way - and I'm back and feeling refreshed and excited for 2014.  I had a lot of time to reflect on what's important to me and my business - new ideas for where I want to take Taura Horn Photography, reviving old ideas and making them happen, and ways to make great things greater.  Add LOTS of crafting/diy projects, roller derby, more time with friends and you pretty much have my 2014 New Year's Resolutions! Here are three exciting things I want to share with you all:

1 - Album!  I LOVE albums.  And I happen to know how to make them from scratch - from constructing the cover and spine, printing the photos, making the bookcloth, putting it all together and every step in-between.  It's been on my mind for a while now, and I officially decided that this is my year to develop a line of handmade albums and boxes for my clients.  I look forward to sharing this new adventure with you all as I go along!

2 - It's all about the WEDDINGS!  This year I'm fully committing to only shooting weddings.  I have all these... IDEAS that I want to do that I get distracted from when I'm constantly switching gears between all that I do.  I want to sharpen my personal vision and keep this wedding photography stuff fresh, non-stagnate and decidedly "Taura".  Introduce some new, faster, cooler ways to work to get the job done even better. Throw in a few commercial jobs with local businesses, and I'll have my happy hands full:)

3 - I now have a special gallery where you can see and purchase some of my personal work.  You can choose to have them individually printed by hand by yours truly on beautiful Hahnemuhle paper, or printed as a canvas wrap.  Some black and white work will have the option to be hand printed ziatypes - stay tuned for a video about the process!  Each print or wrap will be signed, making it super special and super cool:)

Enjoy some of my favorite photos from Kauai!  And yes, you can purchase these and more in the gallery:)  These were all shot on Portra 400 with a Fujifilm GF67 - best travel camera ever!  Developed and scanned by Miller's Photo Lab.
