A collection of images from an on-going body of work that I started in 2005 while camping with my mother, Susan Horn. We have maintained the tradition to travel and make art together like this, at least once a year since then. I see this as an anthropological documentation of my home state of Nebraska, and the Midwest. We are particularly attracted to novelty and the vernacular expressions in the hand painted signs or decorations meant only to inform or please, without thought to a larger audience, devoid of pretension and mass consumerism. I try to photograph these places with a sense of humor and deadpan finality, but also pull no punches. I’m interested in examining the mythologies embedded in the Midwest, our relationship with the natural world and the changing baseline of what is considered natural.
